9/11 Report Cites Many Warnings About Hijackings

Hey look, another objective and unbiased piece of reporting from the NY Times.

Why don't they just come up with the subheading that says "official mouthpiece of the Democrat Party"? At least that way they would be honest about their so called reporting.

The problem (among many) with this story is that pre 9/11, there was simply no (or very very little) concept that someone would ram a jetliner into a sky scraper.

You can have 2,000 warnings that say hijackings are likely, but pre 9/11 what did that mean?? It means that a terrorist asshole will either blow up the plane mid-flight (like Pan Am 103 over Scotland) or hijack the plane to a friendly country like Cuba or Libya or Iran.

Flight crews prior to 9/11 were instructed that in the case of a hijacking, you comply to the best of your ability with the hijacker in order to get the plane on the ground and give the passengers the best chance of survival.

The Times conveniently leaves that part of the equation out of it and would like us all to pretend that prior to 9/11 everyone but the Bush administration had their crystal ball out and saw two planes ram into the WTC and one into the Pentagon.

Yahoo! News - Towns offer free land to newcomers

With the Global Economy, the Internet, FedEx, UPS and the USPS, this doesn't sound like a bad idea. Add in Satellite TV, big screen plasma TV and this is starting to sound like a good idea. Plus take away the high taxes currently paid in the Metroplex, being able to step out the door and start hunting, dirt biking.....

I think I convinced myself. I need to make a trip to Kansas.

Dean Opponent Bows Out of Chairman's Race

nah nah na na, nah nah na na, hey hey hey, goodbye.

Looks like there are two clear losers here.

1. The DNC. For those leftists that think (I mean FEEL) that Howard Dean is going to be their saviour - I've got bad news for you. Dean can't control his mouth in public and his leftist views do not do anything to the vast majority of the country other than make them move more towards right of center.

2. The Clintons. The Clintons have been anti-Dean at least back to the election season last year and we may have just seen the end of Hillary's run for Pres. Time will tell but apparently the Clintons and Dean don't see eye to eye at the current time.

Some in U.S. voting with their feet

For God's sake leave already and don't let the door hit you where the good Lord split you!
I can't tell you how tired I am of this story. These people have had three months to pack their Birkenstocks and bongs and hit the road. Please hurry and be sure and call Alec Baldwin to see if he wants to car pool in your VW Bus.

These people say they love America, but they do not. They sure don't love it like I do. After Bill Clinton was re-elected after everything had come out about him and how he disgraced his presidency, the Oval Office, his marriage, and lied under oath just to name a few, I was disgusted, but never once did I consider moving out of the country. I hope these people leave and leave fast. I also hope they regret it every day they are not living in this great country. Have fun working for less and paying more taxes. Have fun with the government health care program up there, also. And I sure hope the terrorists leave y'all alone, because Canada sure can't protect itself from any threat. Hell, our Salvation Army could kick their asses. It's obvious the last thing these people are interested in is democracy, but the United States has liberated over 60 million people in two different countries and introduced them to democracy. The more countries that democracy has a foot hold in over there, the harder it will be for the terrorist to gain a foot hold. So, post your picture on the "I'm sorry website", then pack your stuff and leave.

"I love the United States," he said as he stood on the Vancouver waterfront, staring toward the Coastal Range, which was lost in a gray shroud. "I fought for it in Vietnam. It's a wrenching decision to think about leaving. But America is turning into a country very different from the one I grew up believing in."

FOXNews.com - U.S. & World - Old Gun Law Reaps New Benefits in S.F.

Here is where you find a core difference between pro-gunners and anti-gunners. Pro gunners believe that if you enforce the existing laws on the books, you have more than enough reason to put thugs in jail. Anti-gunners believe that more laws = more safety, completely disregarding the fact that dozens of laws already exist on the books to prosecute violent crime.

Now, why San Fransisco only recently started to use this "old" law is beyond me.

Bush to Propose Tightest Budget of Presidency

It's about time.

Yahoo! News - School May Fire Professor for 9/11 Comment

I don't think this jack ass should be fired. He should be allowed to freely spout whatever tripe comes out his mouth. The rest of us can then learn from him what liberals think. Let him shout it out from the tallest building. He's just another Mikey Moore wanabe.

I think Churchill's biggest problem is that thanks to the blogosphere and the right wing hit machine on AM radio, he's not been allowed to get off cleanly with his BS.

Liberals aren't used to us fighting them back and it's a beautiful thing.

U.S. General Says It Is 'Fun to Shoot Some People'

How fortunate for General Mattis that he serves under President Bush and not President Clinton.

Immediately after these remarks, President Clinton would have ensured that the good General was run out of the Corps, but not before losing his rank, losing his retirement, and being forced to take anger management class.

Semper Fi, General. Thank you for your service.

Response from Democrats

A little dissection is in order here:
From Senator Reid
"I was born and raised in the high desert of Nevada in a tiny town called Searchlight. My dad was a hard rock miner. My mom took in wash. I grew up around people of strong values - even if they rarely talked about them. They loved their country, worshiped God, never shunned hard work, and never asked for special favors. My life has been very different from what I imagined growing up, but no matter how far I¹ve traveled, Searchlight is still the place I go back to and still the place I call home."
I love this. Do you notice that ever since Kerry's run for the presidency that the Democrats have to go to all sorts of lengths to show that they're "men/women of the people." You don't see Bush doing it, you didn't see Reagan doing it. We knew where our leaders came from and what they stand for. They didn't have to continuously re-invent themselves to try and reach certain segments of our population.
"It's important that we succeed. It's time that America's government lived by the same values as America's families. It's time we invested in America's future and made sure our people have the skills to compete and thrive in a 21st century economy. That's what Democrats believe. That's where we stand."
What exactly does this mean?? It, as usual from the libs, says NOTHING. Who among us can argue with this statement?? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller??
"This 21st century economy holds great promise for our people. But unless we give all Americans the skills they need to succeed, countries like India and China will take good-paying jobs that should be ours."
I seem to recall that a lot of the jobs going overseas are those that involve customer service?? Low paying jobs that folks in China and India are willing to do for less than Americans are willing to do?? What's a telemarketer make per hour anyway??
"I want you to know that when we believe the president is on the right track, we won't let partisan interests get in the way of what's good for the country. We will be first in line to work with him. But when he gets off track, we will be there to hold him accountable."
So the President is "on track" when he does what you want, but "off track" when he plots his own course?? Why is it that you don't think that YOU are the one "off track", Senator?? Why do you think that the American people overwhelmingly placed Republicans in charge rather than Democrats?? Maybe (could it be???) the majority of Americans think that the Republicans are "on track" and your party is going the wrong way?
"Even after the president's speech, the American people are still asking these questions. You can be sure that Democrats will continue to offer real answers in the months ahead."
Your rebuttal was your chance to offer up some answers, Senator, but you do nothing other than cast stones with no solutions. So what's your answer? Where's your plan? What's your vision? Your response was notably lacking in answers, solutions, plans, or vision. It was nothing more than an attack on a President that you detest.

From Congressperson Pelosi
Her preamble is again, nothing more than trying to prove how much she knows and understands the American military and foreign policy. She wastes a good portion of her speech trying to pretend that she actually is a military supporter, and not someone who loathes everything the military stands for. Again, you do not see President Bush bragging about how much time he's spent at the hospitals or with families of those killed and wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. You don't see Bush bragging about how he flew into Baghdad last year to share a holiday meal with our troops.

Bush does NOT have to prove that he supports our troops, but for some reason, the liberals feel compelled to do so. Why do you think that is?
"We have never heard a clear plan from this administration for ending our presence in Iraq. And we did not hear one tonight."
Bush has consistently given an answer to this question, Congresswoman. The answer is, when we win. I realize that you have a hard time understanding what VICTORY is, after all, how long's it been since your party has won anything? We'll be out when it's time to get out and setting a phony timetable will do nothing. I seem to recall Bill Clinton setting a timetable for us to get out of Kosovo, yet I also clearly recall that we still have troops there. Are you upset over that as well?
"For three years, the president has failed to put together a comprehensive plan to protect America from terrorism. And we did not hear one tonight."
Umm, I hate to point this out to you, Madame Pelosi, but I don't seem to recall hearing of another attack on the United States since 9/11. Maybe I forgot, but I don't think so. Obviously, something the President is doing is working.
"Democrats are committed to a strong national security: that keeps America safe, that wins the War on Terror and that never again sends our troops into harm's way without the equipment they need."
Oh yes, that's why your Presidential candidate voted for the 87 billion before he voted against it? And again, why is it that you feel you must so strongly declare your martial spirit?? Could it be that since the Vietnam era the Democrat party has largely spit on the military? Hmmmm?

As usual - no solutions or debate on the issues facing our country. No alternative solutions. Nothing. Only slightly vieled threats, name calling, and whining. The modern day Democrat party at its finest.

The Michael Bane Blog: Day 7 of Michael's Frightening Road Trip...

Classic. For you Glockster's out there:

"A couple of years back, I wrote in a gun magazine (facetiously!) that by 2011, the only handgun made in the world would be the 1911 .45. Everybody else would just throw in the towel, call it a day, retool and knock out the old Browning warhorse by the gazillions. This year's SHOT Show did nothing to dissuade me of the notion. You could stand in the middle of the Las Vegas Convention Center, pick any direction at random, spit and hit a 1911."

Big D is making the switch, and now if we can only convince JR, TG, and Dan (yes, that's his real name, Dan) to shoot a real gun, life will be good. ;)

What if Bush has been right about Iraq all along?

"By now, you might have even voted against George Bush -- a second time -- to register your disapproval.
But after watching Sunday's election in Iraq and seeing the first clear sign that freedom really may mean something to the Iraqi people, you have to be asking yourself: What if it turns out Bush was right, and we were wrong?"
It's a Liberal nightmare: you might actually be (*gasp*) wrong.
I won't say that it had never occurred to me previously, but it's never gone through my mind as strongly as when I watched the television coverage from Iraq that showed long lines of people risking their lives by turning out to vote, honest looks of joy on so many of their faces.
I noticed those looks, too. The ink-stained finger (no, not that one) has become the new symbol of Democracy in an otherwise human-rights wasteland.
For now, though, I think we have to cut the president some slack about a timetable for his exit strategy.

If it turns out Bush was right all along, this is going to require some serious penance.

Latinos protest school’s policies

Again, liberalism at its finest. Free speech only applies if you speak what the liberals want you to speak. Talk about things that 'insult' them, or hurt their widdle feelings, then you of course better shut up. I watched some of the local coverage of this event on TV, and pretty much laughed my ass off watching some of the little wanabe hippie freaks on campus whine about how it's not fair to protest the immigration policies of the US, as it was considered "hate speech".

Just to make sure I got this right - hate speech is when you protest the flood of, and here's the key word dear readers - ILLEGAL immigration.

Read and enjoy from the Denton newspaper. (registration required, which is why I've just pasted the whole thing here)

Students: UNT should not have allowed ‘Capture an Illegal Immigrant Day’

07:23 AM CST on Tuesday, February 1, 2005

By Josh Baugh / Staff Writer

Scores of Latino students from the University of North Texas lambasted their school Monday for allowing a political demonstration that they say amounted to hate speech and called for more stringent restrictions in the campus’ several "free speech" zones.

Latino students and organizations from UNT and other area universities, along with several representatives from the League of United Latin American Citizens gathered to discuss "Capture an Illegal Immigrant Day," held on Wednesday by UNT’s chapter of Young Conservatives of Texas.

"I’m all for freedom of speech," one student said. "But we were offended by the way they conveyed their message."

Pricila Cardenas, president of LULAC at UNT, said the marginalization of illegal immigrants was demeaning and offensive.

"It was not a joke. It was not a game," she said. "If it’s going to offend and hurt people, something should be done."

Several students said in the meeting that UNT’s Dean of Students office shouldn’t have allowed the conservative group access to the free speech zone because of the harmful nature of its demonstration, in which members of the Young Conservatives wore bright orange shirts that read "Illegal Immigrant" on the front and "Catch me if U can" on the back. Passersby could check in at the group’s table, receive a badge and go find the "illegal immigrants." Captures were rewarded with 100 Grand candy bars. The Young Conservatives also handed out literature it says accurately outlines problems with illegal immigration, though many Latino students said it was false and "misinformation."

Dean Ken Ballom said the university does not grant or deny access to the free speech zones based on content.

"I would say all [applications] are granted and basically what we try to do is review to see if there is a health or safety risk, and if the space is available," he said. "No decisions are made based upon the content of the speech."

Students took turns passionately speaking about the pain and humiliation they felt at the hands of the Young Conservatives and calling for action. Some demanded a public apology for the group’s actions.

But Chris Brown, the group’s president, offered none.

"We do feel like our event was not taken as we thought it would have been. We did not want to offend anyone, but it was a side effect," he said to the crowd. "We do not apologize for what we did."

After dozens of students traded ideas of adding constraints to the free speech zones to protect others from the pain they say they suffered last week, UNT professor Abraham Benavides implored the students to move forward and embrace the positive elements that have arisen from the incident.

"I appreciated the emotion that is in this room, but I don’t think we should go down this road," he said. "To say that we don’t want free speech is not a good idea. Someday, you’ll want to have your free speech protected too."

He pointed out that during his time at UNT, he has never seen the unity of the Latino community that he saw Monday night.

"Don’t stop the dialogue," he told them. "Don’t concentrate on the negative."

Rice: Iraqi Election Tops Expectations

72% turnout for the vote. That's amazing. Of course, John Kerry, wanna-be leader of the free world says,
"It is hard to say that something is legitimate when whole portions of the country can't vote and doesn't vote," Kerry said.
John, some of us are tired of hearing your "count every vote" mantra.

72% of the population voted, in spite of threats of violence and even death. Democracy is a great motivator, and once again it's the silent masses who are speaking loudest. Remember, it's a minority of very violent, very evil people who want to retain control of the corrupt fascist state that the 72% have said "no" to. Congratulations to the Iraqi people.

Sen. Barbara Boxer Steps Into Spotlight

'I've always been this way,' she says, 'and I'm trying to figure out exactly why people suddenly find this to be interesting, you know. Somehow I have touched something inside people, and I have not ever had this happen before. The only thing I can think, after reading what people said, is a feeling that I'm asking the kind of questions and saying the kind of things that they are feeling.'
"This way" = "stupid."

It would be SO great if this is the best the Democrats could do for 2008. It only demonstrates how completely out of touch the Democratic party is with the general electorate. If this is where they want to go, fine. But you voting Democrats better get used to this concept: losing.
Sen. Mark Dayton (news, bio, voting record) of Minnesota, a fellow liberal who stood with Boxer in opposing Rice, criticized her on the Senate floor over her decision to bring the November election certification to a halt. He called it "seriously misguided."
Heck, even her pals know she's a nut.

icLiverpool - Ball bearing guns 'must be banned'

Ball bearing guns, AKA BB guns. That's right - you read it correctly: BB guns. The Brits say these must be banned, too. You know, it really sucks that this guy suffered a spinal injury due to a BB gun. When I was a kid, we'd ride our bicycles to "the hills" and have BB gun wars. I have a friend who still has a BB in his side. Guess what? Nobody got their picture in the paper, and pretty much nobody cared. It's an accident, and it sucks. But the guns aren't to blame.

Those who hold that there's no "slippery slope" with respect to gun control should pay attention to this article. It could happen here. What's next? Ban pictures of guns?

Al-Zarqawi Said to Declare 'Fierce War'

Finally, someone actually comes out and admits what some are teaching in the world of Islam:

"We have declared a fierce war on this evil principle of democracy and those who follow this wrong ideology," said the speaker, who identified himself as Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, head of the al-Qaida affiliate in Iraq. "Anyone who tries to help set up this system is part of it."

And it gets better:

"The speaker said democracy was based on un-Islamic beliefs and behaviors such as freedom of religion, rule of the people, freedom of expression, separation of religion and state, forming political parties and majority rule."

Emphasis added was mine.

Now, if there's not a better reason to go out there and squash these little thugs like the cockaroches (imagine me pronouncing that a-la Al Pacino's Scarface) they are, I can't think of one.

What in the world prompted the earth to warm up at that time, some several thousand years ago?? Late-Night King Johnny Carson Dies at 79

A true end of an era.

I remember watching Carson and Ed McMahon with my grandfather when I was but a small lad. Frankly, late night has not ever been the same without him, and the tonight show has pretty much blown since his retirement. No one could match his ability to poke fun at people without the rancor that seems to exist in today's many late night variants.

I suppose to some degree I kept holding out hope that he'd come back some time and rescue late night from it's current state of stagnation but I guess that won't be happening now.

I initially posted this on DC's site in response to a story he told about meeting President Bush way back when.

I thought a little about it and decided to post it here as well for those unfortunate enough to not visit DC. In addition, since I was limited to just 1,000 words (I know, Julie!) I thought some additional comments were warranted.

This story starts many years ago, when W was running for Governor against Ann "I need to iron my face" Richards. In the midst of the campaign, W came to visit the college campus where I worked. At the time, I was working as a tour guide at the museum across the street from campus and going to grad school. We had all been told by the director that if by chance we ran into the candidate's party, we were to steer clear and give them space.

That night, when it was time to lock up and go home, I was getting into my car when I noticed a group of suits getting into their car a few spaces over. Who should it be but W and his door-openers. As I unlocked the door, I looked over the roof of my car at W, and he happened to look back at me as he was sitting down. I nodded, and started to get in my car when he stood up, shrugged off one of his door-openers, and walked around both cars to come talk to me - buttoning his suit coat as he walked over. "Hi, I'm George Bush, and I'd appreciate your vote" he said as he held out his hand. Good handshake - firm, but not one of those 'fake' handshakes you'll get from people who don't know you but want to act like your best friend. I told him he'd have my vote if he held firm with his promise to allow us Texians to carry concealed handguns. He told me he would, and we chatted for a bit and then he got back in his car and left.

I was impressed with his openness and his willingness to get out and 'meet the people' without having a photographer or video camera on hand to chronicle the event and show everyone what a good ole boy he is. Conversely, I can not imagine John Kerry or Al Gore doing the same thing, unless a camera WAS present and they could use this chance meeting as a sign that they are one of the little guys.

There are very few days that go by that I don't give thanks that W is the man, and not Algore or god forbid John Kerry. I am not a Bush sycophant, there is much about his domestic agenda that I do not agree with - but I do think he is THE man for the job today and that without him at the helm, our situation in the world would probably look nicer - as in the French and Germans and Canadians like us - but would in effect be in loads more trouble than we are now with the terrorists.

I love how the news media and the leftists just can't figure the guy out and I take great pleasure from their consternation.

Tomorrow will be a great day indeed, I am looking forward to it.

Amusing. Support of an expired ban mollifies the likes of Schumer, without compromising reality. Nonetheless, I don't much care for the sound of this.

Saddam Agents, Militants Plan 'Vicious' Poll Attacks

To me, this is yet another clear sign that we are on the right track. If we were heading in the wrong direction in Iraq, the asshole terrorists would just sit back and let people vote for them. However, the fact that the tangos seem intent on deterring the election shows me that they are fearful of the results of a free election.

Kerry Criticizes Election Outcome

What a loser. Yes, I conceded the election. But I didn't lose. There was disenfranchisement, but despite my pledge to have every vote counted, I threw in the towel.

So, you have a loser, who admitted he lost, but really didn't lose and the whole reason he lost was because the other side cheated.

The Volokh Conspiracy - Gun Control Doesn't Work

However, the the National Academy of Sciences doesn't want to fess up to that fact.
Last month, the National Academy of Sciences issued a 328-page report on gun control laws. The big news that has been ignored on all the blog sites is that the academy's panel couldn't identify any benefits of the decades-long effort to reduce crime and injury by restricting gun ownership. The only conclusion it could draw was: Let's study the question some more.

The panel has left us with two choices: Either academia and the government have wasted tens of millions of dollars and countless man-hours on useless research (and the panel would like us to spend more in the same worthless pursuit), or the National Academy is so completely unable to separate politics from its analyses that it simply can't accept the results for what they are.

Based on 253 journal articles, 99 books, 43 government publications, and some of its own empirical work, the panel couldn't identify a single gun control regulation that reduced violent crime, suicide or accidents.
Check out the link, and follow the link to John Lott's response to the study. Interesting reading.

The L.A.R.K. Program

A person wrote a letter to the White House complaining about the treatment of a captive taken during the Afghanistan war. Attached is a copy of a letter they received back:

The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington, D.C. ,20016

Dear Concerned Citizen:

Thank you for your recent letter roundly criticizing our treatment of the Taliban and Al Qaeda detainees currently being held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Our administration takes these matters seriously, and your opinion was heard loud and clear here in Washington. You'll be pleased to learn that, thanks to the concerns of citizens like you, we are creating a new division of the Terrorist Retraining Program, to be called the "Liberals Accept Responsibility for Killers" program, or LARK for short. In accordance with the guidelines of this new program, we have decided to place one terrorist under your personal care.

Your personal detainee has been selected and scheduled for transportation under heavily armed guard to your residence next Monday. Ali Mohammed Ahmed bin Mahmud (you can just call him Ahmed) is to be cared for pursuant to the standards you personally demanded in your letter of admonishment. It will likely be necessary for you to hire some assistant caretakers. We will conduct weekly inspections to ensure that your standards of care for Ahmed are commensurate with those you so strongly recommended in your letter.

Although Ahmed is extremely violent, and a sociopathic killer , we hope that your sensitivity to what you described as his "attitudinal problem" will help him overcome these character flaws.

Perhaps you are correct in describing these problems as mere cultural differences. He will bite you, given the chance. We understand that you plan to offer counseling and home schooling. Your adopted terrorist is extremely proficient in hand-to-hand combat and can extinguish human life with such simple items as a pencil or nail clippers. We do not suggest that you ask him to demonstrate these skills at your next yoga group. He is also expert at making a wide variety of explosive devices from common household products, so you may wish to keep those items locked up, unless (in your opinion) this might offend him.

Ahmed will not wish to interact with your wife or daughters (except sexually) since he views females as a subhuman form of property. This is a particularly sensitive subject for him, and he has been known to show violent tendencies around women who fail to comply with the new dress code that Ahmed will recommend as more appropriate attire. I'm sure they will come to enjoy the anonymity offered by the bhurka - over time. Just remind them that it is all part of "respecting his culture and his religious beliefs" - wasn't that how you put it?

Thanks again for your letter. We truly appreciate it when folks like you, who know so much more than we do, even though they have ! never be en there, keep us informed of the proper way to do our job. You take good care of Ahmed - and remember...we'll be watching. Good luck!

Cordially...Your Buddies,

Here's a suggestion to the governments of the US, Australia, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore. Leave the aid effort to feed, clothe, and house the tidal wave victims in Indonesia to their Muslim brethren Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Since they are apparently concerned about having the infidel help them out I think we should do the right thing and get out of the way.

C-130 Pilot's Story

This is a scream. It's allegedly from a colorful writer from the 1st Marine Air Wing based at MCAS Miramar.

There I was at six thousand feet over central Iraq, two hundred eighty knots and we're dropping faster than Paris Hilton's panties. It's a typical September evening in the Persian Gulf; hotter than a rectal thermometer and I'm sweating like a priest at a Cub Scout meeting. But that's neither here nor there. The night is moonless over Baghdad tonight, and blacker than a Steven King novel. But it's 2004, folks, and I'm sporting the latest in night-combat technology - namely, hand-me-down night vision goggles (NVGs) thrown out by the fighter boys.

Additionally, my 1962 Lockheed C-130E Hercules is equipped with an obsolete, yet, semi-effective missile warning system (MWS). The MWS conveniently makes a nice soothing tone in your headset just before the missile explodes into your airplane. Who says you can't polish a turd?

At any rate, the NVGs are illuminating Baghdad International Airport like the Las Vegas Strip during a Mike Tyson fight. These NVGs are the cat's ass. But I've digressed.

The preferred method of approach tonight is the random / shallow. This tactical maneuver allows the pilot to ingress the landing zone in an unpredictable manner, thus exploiting the supposedly secured perimeter of the airfield in an attempt to avoid enemy surface-to-air-missiles and small arms fire. Personally, I wouldn't bet my pink ass on that theory but the approach is fun as hell and that's the real reason we fly it.

We get a visual on the runway at three miles out, drop down to one thousand feet above the ground, still maintaining two hundred eighty knots. Now the fun starts. It's pilot appreciation time as I descend the mighty Herk to six hundred feet and smoothly, yet very deliberately, yank into a sixty degree left bank, turning the aircraft ninety degrees offset from runway heading. As soon as we roll out of the turn, I reverse turn to the right a full two hundred seventy degrees in order to roll out aligned with the runway. Some aeronautical genius coined this maneuver the "Ninety/Two-Seventy." Chopping the power during the turn, I pull back on the yoke just to the point my nether regions start to sag, bleeding off energy in order to configure the pig for landing

"Flaps Fifty! Landing Gear Down!, Before Landing Checklist!" I look over at the copilot and he's shaking like a cat shitting on a sheet of ice.

Looking further back at the navigator, and even through the NVGs, I can clearly see the wet spot spreading around his crotch. Finally, I glance at my steely-eyed flight engineer. His eyebrows rise in unison as a grin forms on his face. I can tell he's thinking the same thing I am..."Where do we find such fine young men?"

"Flaps One Hundred!" I bark at the shaking cat. Now it's all aim-point and airspeed. Aviation 101, with the exception there are no lights, I'm on NVGs, it's Baghdad, and now tracers are starting to crisscross the black sky. Naturally, and not at all surprisingly, I grease the Goodyear's on brick-one of runway 33 left, bring the throttles to ground idle and then force the props to full reverse pitch. Tonight, the sound of freedom is my four Hamilton Standard propellers chewing through the thick, putrid, Baghdad air. The huge, one hundred thirty thousand pound, lumbering whisper pig comes to a lurching stop in less than two thousand feet! Let's see a Viper do that!

We exit the runway to a welcoming committee of government issued Army grunts. It's time to download their beans and bullets and letters from their sweethearts, look for war booty, and of course, urinate on Saddam's home. Walking down the crew entry steps with my lowest-bidder, Beretta 92F, 9 millimeter strapped smartly to my side, I look around and thank God, not Allah, I'm an American and I'm on the winning team. Then I thank God I'm not in the Army. Knowing once again I've cheated death, I ask myself, "What in the hell am I doing in this mess?" Is it Duty, Honor, and Country?

You bet your ass. Or could it possibly be for the glory, the swag, and not to mention - chicks dig the Air Medal. There's probably some truth there too. But now is not the time to derive the complexities of the superior, cerebral properties of the human portion of the aviator-man-machine model. It is however, time to get out of this ****-hole. Hey copilot, clean yourself up! And how's 'bout the 'Before Starting Engines Checklist?"

God, I love this job!

Store Fires Employee Who Refused Service To Marine

Any chance that the convenience store employee might have been from Iraq? Nah.
He went in to the store and asked the clerk (a man of middle eastern descent) for a can of tobacco, at which point the clerk asked him if he was in the military. (He had on a USMC shirt) After my brother replied, "yes sir" the man said nothing to him and looked at the other middle eastern man in the back of the store. Then both men proceeded to go in to the storeroom and did not come out. My brother yelled back to them a time or two and they did not respond.

Jason waited a few minutes and finally left the store.

The New Yorker: Fact

This is it, I thought. A shot will come from somewhere, the Americans will open fire, and the world will witness the My Lai massacre of the Iraq war. At that moment, an American officer stepped through the crowd holding his rifle high over his head with the barrel pointed to the ground. Against the backdrop of the seething crowd, it was a striking gesture - almost Biblical. "Take a knee," the officer said, impassive behind surfer sunglasses. The soldiers looked at him as if he were crazy. Then, one after another, swaying in their bulky body armor and gear, they knelt before the boiling crowd and pointed their guns at the ground. The Iraqis fell silent, and their anger subsided.
A very interesting read. Mind you, I don't agree with all of the assessments and assumptions in the story, but it's full of interesting observations about today's soldiers.

Time for a new game

If you are a member of the International Defensive Pistol Association, you are probably well aware of the sh!t storm that has come down since HQ announced their new rule book is effective as of January 5, 2005. They sent out an email notification, and the rulebook was soon to be found on the internet.

The previous versions of the rulebook were notorious for being vague and nebulous throughout. The new rulebook did much to clarify some things, but was equally nebulous on others. For example, the rulebook mentions both that all rules are effective as of now, but that equipment rules will not take effect until next January. One would assume that holsters were included in equipment since for one thing, common sense would dictate that, and for another, it stated just that in the rulebook. But the rulebook also goes on to state that holsters are not considered 'equipment', only guns. Regardless, changes to the holster rules are the least of my concerns.

The major concern that I have with the new rulebook is the direction that the sport seems to be going. Courses of Fire are looking like they'll get shorter and shorter, distances traveled will get shorter, and it looks like reloads are to be done off the clock. The net effect of this new philosophy is that your weaker shooters are now competing on a more level playing field against the more experienced, and faster shooters. And not only are you hosing the better shooters, the rulebook comes out and openly states that the sport is geared towards new and average shooters. None of whom frequent this blog.

So, now we are not only essentially being penalized for our speed, but when we travel for hours to compete at large, sanctioned matches, you can expect to shoot shorter courses of fire that are not as challenging as what we would like to shoot.

Not me. I'm done with major IDPA matches. I've put in 5 years for this sport, paid my dues, worked my butt off for the organization that has effectively run me out of town.

As of tonight, I have rejoined the other, older sport shooting association - United States Practical Shooting Assocation - where the rules are the rules, they are not grey, and I can shoot a match anywhere in the country and have the rules interpreted the same regardless of where I go. I started my shooting career with uspsa, began to shoot idpa, and now I'm going back to my roots.

I'll see you at the range.

An Open Letter to Illiterates

Okay, so semi-literates.

First off, the difference between "loose" and "lose." If something is all dangly, or is easy to get into bed, it's loose. If you don't win, you lose. Moreover, the non-winner is the LOSER, not the "looser."

Next, "to" and "too." I'll skip "two," because if you're that stupid, stop reading now. "Too" much of a good thing, not "to" much. "Let's go to the movies, and rob a 7-11, too." Is that too hard to understand?

Apostrophes. Why are they such a mystery? First off, there are contractions - the combination of two(!) words, like "there is" = "there's" and "are not" = "aren't." Next, we have the possessive versus contractive. JR's take on this is that people don't look at the context. Here's a simple test: if there's more than one, it's plural, and doesn't require an apostrophe. If the sentence mentions something that belongs to the noun, then it's possessive. "A shooter's ability is measured by shooting"(that's possessive). "There are reasons that shooters don't face each other when shooting." (that's plural). Here's a full rundown on plurals vs. possessives.

Their, there, and they're:
There = at or in that place.
Their = the possessive form of they.
They're = the contraction of "they are."
They're there for their own reasons.

One more thing: "its" is the possessive form of it. "It's" is the contraction of "it is" or "it has." If you can replace "it's" in your sentence with "it is," or "it has," then your word is "it's;" otherwise, your word is "its." There's no such word as "its'"

Your and you're is another one I see a lot. "You're" is a contraction of "you are." "Your" indicates ownership or possession. As in: "You're a sanctimonious grammar nazi and I hate your guts."

That's all for now. I feel better.

Congress Certifies Bush's Win After Protest

"The rare objection to vote certification, the first filed in decades, forced the House and Senate to halt their joint session, usually a routine and ceremonial affair. Each chamber then debated the objection, and rejected it, the Senate by a 74-1 vote, the House 267-31. The state-by-state certification was completed a few hours later. "
Boxer and Tubby Jones should be forced to park cars for Congress for a week, just for wasting everyone's time. I especially love the 74-1 smackdown that Boxer got from her colleagues.
But one of Ohio's senators, Republican Mike DeWine, called the complaints "wild, incoherent and completely unsubstantiated." Several lawmakers in both chambers noted that Ohio votes had been recounted and the results certified by bipartisan local election boards.
Boo-hoo, Babs. Let. It. Go.

Another misleading headline, but at least the article's about guns. And gays.
What separates these shooters from so many others is more intimate than their firepower. Garrison happens to be a lesbian. City still grapples with the grackles

Since I figure this story requires registration, here you go...

There's an easy solution, by the way. Just start shooting the stupid birds, clean em and then feed em in soup to the homless. Two problems solved at once.

By Anna M. Tinsley

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

FORT WORTH - Ready, aim, fire.

Private business and property owners could soon join city workers with crackershot in hand in an attempt to rid the city of pesky grackles and the mess they leave behind.

The City Council is considering a proposal to expand the city's downtown "grackle relocation" program in which workers fire into the air with 12-gauge shotguns filled with cracker shells that sound like fireworks.

Under the proposal, the shells could also be used by police, neighborhood leaders and business owners, who would fire into the air across the city at the same time on designated days.

"There is great interest in a coordinated effort ... to push them into farm fields and other habitats," said Randle Harwood, acting director of the city's parks department. "But we want to do it carefully."

Mayor Mike Moncrief has said he'd prefer to use real shotgun shells, but said he knows that's not possible -- or even an especially good idea.

"We need to work on realistic approaches," he said.

The large black birds -- which typically are unafraid of people -- have increasingly become a public nuisance, settling into trees throughout the city to roost, squawk and relieve themselves on sidewalks and passers-by.

Some sidewalks have to be washed as often as five times a week, said Todd Holzaepfel, vice president of Downtown Fort Worth Inc.

Efforts to scare the birds away have been costly and unsuccessful for the long term, however.

In addition to the city's program, the downtown group has hired crews to fire paintballs and shine laser guns into the trees to annoy the birds, at a cost of about $100,000 a year.

"I don't think we're ahead of this," Holzaepfel said. "I think we are barely maintaining."

Councilwoman Wendy Davis said the grackles leave the popular downtown area dirty and unattractive.

"There are nasty, filthy piles of bird poop downtown," she said. "It's a public health issue, as well as a cleanliness issue."

The cleaning puts residents at risk for histoplasmosis, a respiratory disease contracted by those who breathe in dried particles of bird excrement. Symptoms can resemble the flu or tuberculosis.

Research shows that grackles aren't all bad, however. They eat mice and crawling insects such as crickets and roaches, which can also pose problems, officials said.

Councilman Donavan Wheatfall questioned whether the "relocation" program will simply move the problem.

"My concern is, where are we pushing them to?" Wheatfall said. "I don't want to alleviate the problem downtown and just move it to the neighborhoods."

City officials agreed to study the feasibility of allowing private participation in the program, and to develop a system for training and permits to allow individuals or groups to participate.

A formal proposal could be developed by fall, officials said.

"This is more than an inconvenience," Moncrief said. "This is a quality of life issue.

"I can't believe we can't figure out some way to get a handle on this problem. I'm serious about this. I won't let up."

Guards provide safety, peace of mind

It's ironic this article on security guards was published today.
"'When a (nonmember) does come in, I am looking for bulges in their clothing and guns,' he said."
What if they're just happy to see you, Kevin?
To carry a gun, a private security guard first needs to obtain a firearms permit. That requires passing a test on the use of the firearm, and then being fingerprinted and undergoing the background check.

Ziegler also had to obtain permits to carry a baton, pepper spray and Mace. He said he was familiar with the weapons, having once taken classes in hopes of serving as a reserve officer for Bay Area police departments.
Ah. I feel safer already.

The Mall Ninja

The recent post of Tactical Tommy reminded me of the GlockTalk thread that started the infamous "Mall Ninja" legend. Turns out there's an actual MallNinja.com, and they have archived these threads, started by my hero, Gecko_45. If you've got a while, please give it a read. An excerpt:
It's okay for me to talk about my job, as long as I'm not specific. I am the Sergeant of a three-man Rapid Tactical Force at one of America's largest indoor retail shopping areas. Although there are typically between fifteen and twenty normal security officers working the beat there, we decided a while ago that it would be best to have a specilized force for violent individuals. We use modified electric vehicles and can be anywhere on a given floor within eight and a half minutes.

Naturally, the regular security people are unarmed. We "RTFers", by arrangement with the local police, carry high-strength OC spray and batons. If we have a full tactical alert and permission from the local LEOs we also have a Mossberg 500 with less-lethal rounds and two K-frame Smith .38s loaded with 158gr. LRN.

Basically, the situation is that we get the call, we lock up the situation, put everything five by five, and cordon the area until the local authorities arrive. We're cops, we just don't get the glory.

I am not permitted to carry Glocks on duty; however, when my wife picks me up from work I strap on the "Deadly Duo" of a 27 and 23, each with Bar-Sto .357 bbl.
Priceless.

Crazy Sanity-Challenged People and the Internets (Part Deux)

This is pretty much a repost of an old article I did last year, but I've added a few new ones.

I guess crazy people have been around for as long as there have been "normal" people, but it wasn't until the advent of the Internets that I've had to put up with them. I mean, how often do you actually physically meet a bonafide loony, really? However, a casual stroll through the web will avail you of all sorts of conspiracy theorists, wannabe superstars, and just plain old-fashioned whackos who now have a medium through which they can share their lunacy with the rest of humankind.

What's that you say? You don't know what I'm talking about? Be deprived no longer. Look, linger over their particular brand of whackiness, and don't forget to buy their products!

The Nibiruan Council. You can order the Planetary Ascension Package B for only $99.00. Sounds like a deal to me. This site is so seriously crazy that I fear for my own sanity just for having read parts of it.

John Titor - okay, technically not a nut, but has inspired a generation of new nuts. John came from the future. Well, actually from the past, returning to the future, because he needed a vintage IBM computer to solve some sort of UNIX problem in the future. Um, anyway, there's gonna be civil war and Mad Cow disease all over the place, unless we do something. In all fairness, it would make a pretty cool movie, vis-a-vis Terminator.

Orbit is interesting. If by interesting you mean horribly confusing, rambling, incoherent psychotic rants about chemtrails, earthquakes, and those devil-worshipping Bushes.

Armageddon Online. Can't tell yer megatsunamis from your pandemics without this site! Did you know a wave thousands of feet high will someday hit New York? It's on the Internets, so it must be true!

Swami Sananda - one of my all-time fave loonies, and the one whose ass I want to kick the most. An aggravating website resplendent with unwanted new-age music, horrible HTML and graphics, and lots and lots of pics of Swami Bananarama. He's the coo-cookiest, man.

My Bodyweight. That's the name of the title page. Seriously. This person is one reason that I carry a gun. He is so very seriously insane that it boggles the sane part of my mind (what's left of it after looking at this site). This dude can't keep a job because someone is manipulating the timeline to change history, mess with his ability to stay married, change the climate, and generally commit shenannigans. Of course, this guy is the ONLY person who's on to this scheme. Thank goodness his sane and sober exegesis of this vast conspiracy can be perused via the wonderful WWW. Don't forget: the shiny side of the foil goes out. Update - can't seem to get to either www.evidence-timeline.com, or www.evidence-timeline.com. Pity.

The Reptilians. Who are they really? Who really cares? This crazy person does. Buy her music.

Thule makes mincemeat of Mensa! An alliterative nutball. Cool.

Archure (it's a copyrighted name). Turn your speakers up for this one, kids! Archure's a musical genius. Just ask him. Let's face it, there's not that many musical geniuses writing MIDI music anymore. Mostly because it sucks. Visit the Music page and be amazed! Pure genius.

Crystalinks. Ellie Crystal's a psychic! Neato! She got abducted by aliens! Sweet! She's from Brooklyn! ick. Craptacular site.

Infowars.com - Alex Jones hates everything, apparently. Especially the government. Conspiracy! Conspiracy!

Jeff Rense must have the same water supply as Alex Jones. Mercy. If the volume of crap you put out equals truth, Jeff is the mullet-wearing man!

I've noticed a disturbing trend with most of these sites - a complete lack of visual acuity and any taste whatsoever. They have dozens of pages, and each page is about a mile long. It's called "hyperlinking," people. Use it. Don't believe me? Take a look at DREAMS OF THE GREAT EARTH CHANGES. Cover your eyes, then use the scroll wheel on your mouse. A lot.

This is making me tired, and that means the rays are taking control of my mind. Must...get...rest...sleep...consume...reproduce....zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Fatality mars North Carolina gun tradition

Sounds like a great tradition.

Also sounds like these guys are idiots.

From what the story hints at, these morons are firing (blanks) out of antique, period muskets/rifles.

Let me be clear - that's just plain stupid.

For one thing, you are destroying a piece of American history every time you light one up. For another, black powder is one of the most corrosive things in the world, and if you don't take care of your weapon, it's going to rust out and do exactly what these morons had happen to them. I'm terribly sorry that one of them died, but it would appear to be Darwin at work once again.

Here's a hint, fellas. Keep the tradition going, stop drinking beer (they're German descendants, I'm sure beer was involved somewhere :) ), and use reproduction firearms.

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi reportedly arrested in Iraq

Now, wouldn't this be interesting if it proves to be true??

IF so, I imagine they found him cowering in a hole somewhere, just like SH. Funny how the tough guys don't go down fighting, eh, and just give it up??

North Korea reportedly sold arms to MILF

Wait a minute...according to Sarah Brady and her safety-minded pals, terrorist buy their assault weapons at U.S. gun shows. Of course, they could only get semi-autos here. So, if Korea has a yard sale on full-auto (real) assault weapons, and terrorist buy them there, then...wait - I'm confused. Do you mean the the Violence Policy Center is lying?

And what's up with this?
Between 1999 and 2002, North Korea also attempted to sell submersible vessels to the MILF, which is fighting for independence for Mindanao in the southern Philippines, the sources said.
So now Rachel Hunter is a Philippine rebel? Dang. I'm really confused now.
Meanwhile, the Southeast Asian terrorist organization Jamaah Islamiyah...is known to be training recruits in MILF training camps in Mindanao.
And there's a SCHOOL for that? I gotta get out more.

BoyoBoy

Put down your AK and drop your bazooka...

If this isn't a joke, it's the gayest thing I have ever seen.

Carter Urged to Quit Fishin'

The folks at PETA are urging Carter to quit fishin' because they say fishin' is inconsistent with his humanitarian efforts. What does promoting human welfare and social reforms have to do with fishin'? If Carter is anything like myself and others that I have gone fishing with, he probably releases what he catches except for the ones he is going to have the little woman fry up when he gets home.
If Carter caves to these extremists, then calling him a weenie would be an insult to weenies all over the world.

Police winning war on BB guns

Those silly Brits.
Under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003, it is an offence to possess an unloaded air weapon or imitation firearm in a public place without lawful authority or excuse.
Since when is a child's toy considered "anti-social?"

Gee, no opportunity for government abuse here, huh?

Giants 28, Cowboys 24

I seem to recall saying this before, but the Cowboys have an affinity for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Last night, it was 66 yards in 6 plays, with the help of a completely stupid and flagrant roughing penalty that tacked 15 yards onto a 23-yard pass. It was a brilliant strategy, complemented by the porous Cowboy defense, which has evidently never seen a draw play before. In other words, the Cowboys suck.
