My President

I initially posted this on DC's site in response to a story he told about meeting President Bush way back when.

I thought a little about it and decided to post it here as well for those unfortunate enough to not visit DC. In addition, since I was limited to just 1,000 words (I know, Julie!) I thought some additional comments were warranted.

This story starts many years ago, when W was running for Governor against Ann "I need to iron my face" Richards. In the midst of the campaign, W came to visit the college campus where I worked. At the time, I was working as a tour guide at the museum across the street from campus and going to grad school. We had all been told by the director that if by chance we ran into the candidate's party, we were to steer clear and give them space.

That night, when it was time to lock up and go home, I was getting into my car when I noticed a group of suits getting into their car a few spaces over. Who should it be but W and his door-openers. As I unlocked the door, I looked over the roof of my car at W, and he happened to look back at me as he was sitting down. I nodded, and started to get in my car when he stood up, shrugged off one of his door-openers, and walked around both cars to come talk to me - buttoning his suit coat as he walked over. "Hi, I'm George Bush, and I'd appreciate your vote" he said as he held out his hand. Good handshake - firm, but not one of those 'fake' handshakes you'll get from people who don't know you but want to act like your best friend. I told him he'd have my vote if he held firm with his promise to allow us Texians to carry concealed handguns. He told me he would, and we chatted for a bit and then he got back in his car and left.

I was impressed with his openness and his willingness to get out and 'meet the people' without having a photographer or video camera on hand to chronicle the event and show everyone what a good ole boy he is. Conversely, I can not imagine John Kerry or Al Gore doing the same thing, unless a camera WAS present and they could use this chance meeting as a sign that they are one of the little guys.

There are very few days that go by that I don't give thanks that W is the man, and not Algore or god forbid John Kerry. I am not a Bush sycophant, there is much about his domestic agenda that I do not agree with - but I do think he is THE man for the job today and that without him at the helm, our situation in the world would probably look nicer - as in the French and Germans and Canadians like us - but would in effect be in loads more trouble than we are now with the terrorists.

I love how the news media and the leftists just can't figure the guy out and I take great pleasure from their consternation.

Tomorrow will be a great day indeed, I am looking forward to it.
