Way back in the day, when I was but a lowly grad student, I once wrote a paper discussing why the EU would eventually fail. I listed two main reasons:

1. The lack of a unified military to enforce political will outside the EU when diplomacy fails.
2. The manner in which the EU 'standardized' European products. For example, rather than have Turkey produce items to German specifications, the EU mandated that German specs were too rigid for many of the EU countries to fairly compete with: ergo, the German specs were lowered to Turkish standards.

Hunter Murder: Assault Rifle?

Vang is accused of opening fire on several hunters Sunday with a semiautomatic assault rifle, leaving six people dead and two wounded, authorities said.

The last time I checked, the SKS was a curio and relic piece that goes for about $129, and is popular as a cheap, somewhat reliable hunting rifle. As defined, your basic so-called "assault rifle" has scary features like pistol grips, collapsible stocks, flash hiders and the like. I think it might have a detachable magazine, and some models come with a folding bayonet, but that's about it. In other words, it's the same as a Ruger Mini-30 (same caliber and all), which nobody would characterize as an assault weapon. Bet your butt that the VPC has latched onto it, though.

In any event, I'm pretty sure the trigger didn't pull itself. Of course, his relatives are shocked and stunned, but they are quick to point out that racism may have played a role in these murders. Apparently, there's a large Hmong population in St. Paul, MN (figure that one out - from Laos to Minnesota???). Crazy situation. Guess we'll stand by and wait for the rest of the story...

I'm sure a movie will never come close to what it was like, although I thought Band of Brothers was fantastic, especially the Bastone episodes. These men should never have to pay taxes or pay for their own beer.

Just as I'm sure that our soldiers now fall into that same category. As we all settle into a nice wonderful Thanksgiving dinner and a day filled with family and football, I will be thinking of them. I hope everyone takes a moment to think about our Armed Forces over the holidays.

Alexander - Oliver Stone Defends

Well, it probably comes as no surprise that the latest Oliver Stone film has created controversy already. Just for the record, I despise most of Oliver Stone's movies. The pseudo-historical ones are revisionist liberal crap, and others like "Natural Born Killers" are just self-indulgent crap. Having said that, I'd like to see "Alexander." He's one of my favorite historical figures, because he really did change the world, mostly for the better. The controversy revolves around his, um, Greek tendencies. Most historians agree that Alexander and Hephaistion were a couple. Whatever. He conquered the world, intermingled cultures, opened trade routes, created a lingua franca for that trade, and generally laid the groundwork for Greek culture and language to be widespread throughout the then-known world. This enabled the spread of education, philosophy and literature, and provided a foundation for the spread of the soon-to-be Christian religion.

What will be interesting to see is if Oliver Stone can screw that up.

The main critics have all been solidly discredited as partisian hacks. Yet the high and mighty ABC/CBS/NBC news conglomorates continue down that road.

Concerning their worry over the reporting of exit polling, how's this: let's not even post any election information till the day after. That'll give them all night to get the counts in, and then report the outcome the next day.
