I was the first kid in my neighborhood to get Verizon FiOS Service (that's fiber optic service for the uninitiated), which was an upgrade from my DSL service. An upgrade except for one thing: I had some extra disk space that I had purchased for use by this blog. I store this blog on my Verizon web space, see? When DSL was turned off, the extra space went away. After talking to the droids at Verizon, I figured that all out, and then bought some additional disk space.

Meantime, Blogger has been having database issues. Some days you just can't win.

I felt compelled to post this even if Dan and I are the only ones interested in it.
In 1989, I was just starting out roadracing motorcycles. I had no prior racing experience, and I started when a lot of people my age start thinking about hanging up the helmet. There was a family from Owensboro, Ky. that showed up at the track to race. Earl, the father is the nicest guy you could meet. His sons were very well mannered and polite kids. They had been flat track racing since age 5. They were being groomed to be World Champions. It was rumored that Earl had a forged birth certificate for Nicky, and now that we know he was born in 1981, we know he was actaully an eight year old, 4 years away from being the youngest you can be considered to get a provisional race licence. In 1989 we were racing YSR 50's. These are mini roadrace motorcycles. Nicky's feet couldn't touch the ground. He had to start at the back of the grid while Earl held the bike up and when he came into the pits, they had to be there to catch him. In 1990 we were at the YSR National Championships. I was unable to be there until Saturday and wasn't able to qualify so I let my good friend Damon Harvey take my Superbike and race it. Armed with the fasted YSR on the planet he won the Expert Class National Championship. It was tough being a spectator, but I enjoyed watching and was able to get a lot of video. I was taping Nicky and Tommy and asked Nicky what his goal for the future was. He said "I'm gonna be World Champion". I didn't think it was cute, or funny. I just thought that with that mindset and the fact Earl would do everything he could to get him the opportunity for a chance to compete for it, he just might do it.
He graduated to bigger bikes and ran the "D" Superbike class on a street version of the TZ250, a TZ-R. Then after making his climb up the ladder landed a ride on the Factory Honda AMA 750 Superbike. He won big including the Daytona 200. He then was promoted to the factory Honda MotoGP Team. This is the pinnacle of motorcycle racing. He won his first MotoGP race this weekend at the USGP at Laguna Seca. He got the hole shot and led every lap of the race. After the race, he stopped and got an American Flag then and made a victory lap. Then he picked up Earl and made another one. I can't tell you how proud I am for him and his family. Someone once wrote that the best thing about winning is finding out you can. Now that he has won at the highest level and beat Valentino Rossi, who is arguably the best ever, his next step is contending for the World Championship. I'm betting he get one before his career is over. Congratulations Nicky.

Liberalism today

Was listening to Hannity while washing the car today. Sean had a liberal author, Juliana _________, who just about made me want to jump through the radio waves and just choke her to death. Among other topics:

1. The chickens have come home to roost, as the United States is now getting paid back for 200 years of repression - against the American Indians and slaves; therefore, we deserve whatever the terrorists throw at us
2. American is not a "good" country - Hannity asked this lady the question "is America a good country?" Her silence was overwhelming
3. America is not fighting a just war
4. Bush is evil and out of control

There was more, but frankly I was so pissed off after listening to this buffoon speak that I was losing my ability to think rationally. I do not know how people like this can even wake up and get out of bed each morning in the United States of America and look at the world in the distorted way they do.

America (and the west in general) is not just fighting a war against the islamofascists. We are also fighting a fifth column that is working very hard to destroy us from within. I have no doubts that without the blogosphere and talk radio that we would indeed be back home with our tail between our legs already.

It makes me wonder what would have happened in WWII during battles like at the Bulge where 80,000 Americans were killed, wounded, or captured all in a matter of a few months. The Washington Post, the NYT and Dan Rather would have been running for cover, and the sky would have been falling indeed.

As a public service, I'm going to start posting my own rankings of some quality cigars. First, the rules, such as they are:
1. Cigars for these tests will not cost more than ~ $10. Good enough for a great smoke, but affordable enough for us normal blokes to enjoy on a frequent basis.
2. The ratings will be on a * scale. 1* being the worst, and 5* being the best.
3. For reference, the only cigar I can rate at a 5* now is the Ashton #40.

Why cigars? Well, that's easy. Cigars smell and taste good, and more importantly, you can use a particular cigar to remember a good time with good friends and family. My grandfather smoked the occasional cigar, and I can't smoke a good cigar today without remembering what a great man my grandfather was, or the things we would do like go bass fishin', or working in the kitchen of his restaurant after closing time.
I've also had many a good smoke after a hard fought shooting match with my friends - a good smoke after a match is indeed something pleasant to look forward to, and something pleasant to remember.

Plus, they seem to have the ability to totally piss off liberals, and that all by itself would make it priceless.

So, straight to the first review:

Size - robusto, maybe 36 gauge or so
Smoke time - 1.25 hours, down past the paper. I needed a roach to finish it off. Had I not been in a little bit of a hurry, this smoke would easily have lasted an hour and a half or more.
Rating - 4.5 * I'll be smoking another one, this was a great smoke. I really enjoyed the strong maduro flavor, and the ability to smoke her all the way down to the nub ranks pretty high in my book. The smoke drew easily, and was perfectly firm - not too hard, not too soft.

I'm at a loss as to who benefits from these things, save for the elderly who can make a few bucks from an old wall-hanger rifle. The police must know that they're not taking criminal's guns, but they keep facilitating these things, then look important by "cataloging and destroying" these dangerous antiques. City politicians assuage their own guilt for not really knowing what to do by doing something utterly ineffective. It's politics at its finest.

Overall, police collected 10 assault rifles, including one the owner said he found in the bushes. Assault weapons were worth $200; handguns were $100 and $75 for rifles and shotguns. There were no questions asked.

200 bucks for an assault weapon. I paid closer to $1000 for mine. Great plan, West Palm Beach. America should follow your model of ineffective, inefficient government.

Random Thoughts on 9/11, Terrorists, Liberals, and the War on Terror.

I had a lot of time to think while I was driving back in town today. I thought I would scattershoot on some thoughts I had on 9/11, the war and Liberals.
I was in Shreveport, La. today on business. I had an hour or so to kill before my next appointment, so I went to the air museum at Barksdale A.F.B. to have a look around. Outside they have several historic planes roped in on the lawn. You can pretty much walk right up to them just shy of arms reach. I spent a little time looking at each of them, but none were as impressive as the SR-71 Blackbird.
I went inside the building where they have little vignettes, each a display of a different era. I walked through them and near the end they had an exhibit of 9/11. They had the podium our President stood at when he addressed the country from Barksdale. On the podium was a computer screen that played a loop of his short speech. I must have stood there and watched it 5 times. Watching it again and listening to the words he spoke gave me a feeling of pride I cannot fully describe. He spoke of the cowardly aggression and that we would find the people responsible and they would be punished. He is truly the right man for this job. I shudder to think what direction we would have gone if Al Gore were the President. Another computer screen showed a slide show of both horrific images of the attack and the aftermath and the heroic acts of people trying to help. As I stood and watched this I was reminded how I felt that day. The anger, the fear and the sorrow returned like it happened yesterday. Those images should be shown often. The people that are starting to go soft and are tiring of the war on terror should see them again. It would probably strengthen their resolve. I know it does mine.
There are a few things the libs are saying these days that are just idiotic. One is the talking points where they state that Iraq is the new training ground for the terrorists. They would have you believe they are learning about urban warfare there so they can pull it off some place else later. This is such B.S. If having your ass kicked all over the desert is training then let them train. They don't need to go to Iraq to learn how to make a improvised explosive device (IED). That is the only thing they have had any luck with.
London has had it's share of people protesting America and England this week during the summit, but where are the protesters now? Why aren't they protesting the terrorists? These people sicken me. How can you witness what these terrorists did in London and not see they are truly the face of evil? They murder innocent men, women, and children in the name of religion. We are not talking collateral damage. They are the intended targets. The evil doers need to be hunted down and killed because they can't be reasoned with and you can't negotiate a peace settlement with them. All you need to do is look at Spain. They were attacked and voted out the party supporting the war. After pulling out of Iraq and no longer supporting the WOT, they were attacked again. The Islamists hate us for who we are and the freedom we enjoy and as long as we are around they will try to kill us.
As far as the war on terror is going, I think it has been a major success so far. The fact that they haven't been able to strike us here shows that. If they had been able to attack us again here at home they would. I won't diminish the attack in London. It was horrific, but the fact that all these animals can do is set off IED's of less than 10 pounds each shows they are not that strong right now. If they could have set off a dirty bomb or worse, they would in a heartbeat.
In closing I would like to say that the road ahead is a never ending battle between good and evil and we must triumph. The Liberals need to understand that we didn't start it, but we damn well better finish it, so support the troops and support the President and shut the F&#@ up. The terrorist need to understand that a few bombs let off is only going to piss us off more and strengthen our resolve.

We are not truly free if government can just come in and take our land and give it to somebody else for the sake of making that person and the city in which it is in more money. We have all lost freedom and liberty with the Supreme Court ruling in the "Kelo vs. City of New London" case. Justice Souter was one who voted to take freedom and liberty from us. According to him, it is constitutional that a city government has the right to take your property and give it or sell it to somebody who will generate more tax dollars and revenue for the city, whether it be your family home, your family farm, or some other family business. If they want it for that reason, you no longer have a right to the land you own.
I am sure he never considered the fact that he too would be losing liberty and freedom like the little people he ruled against. He probably never considered it could happened to him, but it just might.

A new ruling by the Supreme Court which was supported by Justice Souter himself itself might allow it. A private developer is seeking to use this very law to build a hotel on Souter's land.

I for one hope it does, and I can't wait to hear what he thinks about it when they build a hotel on his property.

Nothing like being out on the line with the other surfers and smelling the fish kill as the sharks tore into the bait fish out past the break. Concealed weapons advocate in House sets up free firearms classes for governor

As most responsible gun owners know, education is the key to safety, whether you're talking about guns, cars, fire, etc. The more you know about a subject, and the more experience you've had in a certain area, the more likely you are to make an intelligent decision, right?

Not if you're a shill for the anti-gun minions:

"I object to this being framed as merely educational, with no larger political intent," Carabello said. "This is not government responding to the public. This is a special interest trying to affect lawmakers."

At least she knows she's losing this argument based on logic, and is now resorting to illogic to make her "case."

What was the impact of education?

A year later, Huntsman still doesn't carry a gun. The only firearm he owns is a .22-caliber rifle he got as a teenager. The governor says he went to the class mostly to learn about Utah's law.
"I was interested in seeing what someone off the street has to go through in order to qualify," he said. "I thought it was rigorous.
"I came out of it understanding how to carry and how to be responsible," Huntsman added. "I felt I could carry a weapon without hurting someone, but choose not to."

Here's the bottom line from both sides:

Oda says his purpose in arranging the free classes is to increase the level of understanding - and support - for concealed carry permits in Utah's Capitol.
"If someone wants to become informed about it, learn both sides and then criticize, great," he said. "Speak from education, not emotional rhetoric. Emotion is dangerous."
But Carabello says the free classes don't pass the proverbial "smell test." Oda's classes, she says, are a subtle form of lobbying for looser laws - something Utah doesn't need.

I'm guessing Ms. Carabello won't be taking a concealed carry class anytime soon - it would distort her bias, and that's something she couldn't cope with.

This is my elbow being drained of some horrible crap after an injury the week before. It had swollen up pretty badly after smacking it hard, and the doc says it's "traumatic bursitis." I was at the Texas State IDPA match, and my friend Ginger (who's a nurse) offered to drain it. We set up shop on the tailgate of her boyfriend's pickup truck, and after I was properly anesthetized, she stuck me. 7cc later, it was much better. The headline really doesn't do this story justice. This guy tries to enter the US with a sword, a hatchet, a knife, brass knuckles, and a blood-stained chainsaw. The crackerjack Customs agents seized the weapons, and let him in. Meanwhile, back home in Canada, this guy's left 2 bodies behind, one without his head attached. Here's where the real detective work begins.

Despres, 22, immediately became a suspect because of a history of violence between him and his neighbors, and he was arrested April 27 after police in Massachusetts saw him wandering down a highway in a sweat shirt with red and brown stains. He is now in jail in Massachusetts on murder charges, awaiting an extradition hearing next month.

When questioned about how a loony was let into the States, a spokesman quoted:

"Nobody asked us to detain him," Anthony said. "Being bizarre is not a reason to keep somebody out of this country or lock them up. ... We are governed by laws and regulations, and he did not violate any regulations."
